The Festival of Kites

Every spring, the town of Windarra held the Festival of Kites — a celebration that began long before the first houses were built or the roads were paved. According to local tradition, the festival honoured the ancestral spirits who, as the story went, once guided travellers across the plains by sending colourful birds into the sky. Over time, those birds became symbols, and the symbols became kites.

Fifteen-year-old Jaya had attended the festival every year of her life, but this year felt different. Her grandmother, who had always helped her craft a kite from bamboo and bright paper, had passed away the previous winter. Jaya wasn't sure she wanted to go at all. The idea of flying a kite without her felt like breaking a promise.

Still, on the morning of the festival, Jaya found herself walking toward the field where hundreds of people were already gathering. The air shimmered with colour — reds, blues, golds — as kites of every shape tugged at their strings. Laughter drifted across the grass, mingling with the rhythmic beat of traditional drums.

Jaya held her own kite tightly. It was simple, made from leftover paper and a frame she had built herself. She felt its uneven edges and wished, not for the first time, that her grandmother were there to guide her hands.

As she stepped onto the field, an elderly woman approached her. "Your kite," she said gently, "has the colours of the dawn. A brave choice."

Jaya blinked. "I wasn't sure it was good enough."

The woman smiled. "A kite doesn't fly because it is perfect. It flies because someone believes it should."

Jaya looked up at the sky, then at her kite. For the first time that day, she felt a small spark of warmth — the kind her grandmother used to kindle with a single encouraging nod. She lifted the kite, let the wind catch it, and watched as it rose, wobbling at first, then soaring steadily into the bright, open sky.
